This is an unalloyed High-Carbon Steel, suitable for pressing, bending, and drawing. Proper heat treating will result in high yield strength and hardness.
For parts to serve as springs, it is recommended to reach the hardness of 43-48 HRc. Although one can reach much higher hardness, it might result in a brittle and more breakable part vulnerable to cracks and fractures.
Despite the simple heat treatment, one should consider heat treating the products by a skilled craftsman in a well equipped shop, to achieve most benefits and avoid cracking, distortion and other undesired side effects.
If the part is to be electro-plated, it is essential to perform Hydrogen release in order to prevent cracking.
Maton Metals stocks Steels containing about 0.7% Carbon and about 0.75% Manganese (SAE 1070, CS70, C67S). Most gauges available both in coils and plates.
